Downsizing is rarely a design problem at first. It is an editing problem: which of the things you have lived with for thirty years actually belong in a house with fewer rooms and a completely different light.
We do that edit with you before anything is shipped, so you are not paying to move furniture that was never going to fit.
What we hear most
The situations downsizers & relocating homeowners come to us with.
You do not know what will fit
We measure the new house and lay your existing pieces into the plan before the movers are booked. Some things fit beautifully; some are three inches too deep to work.
Everything looks wrong in Florida light
Northern rooms are furnished for a different sky. Colours that were warm in Ohio can read yellow here, which is a paint conversation more often than a furniture one.
Two households becoming one
Combining after a move or a marriage means twice the furniture and half the space. We build one plan you both recognise rather than splitting the house down the middle.
You want it done before the family visits
Tell us that date at the first call. It is usually the real deadline, and it changes what we can order.
The edit, before the move
Doing this in the right order saves more money than any single purchase decision later.
- Measure the new rooms properly, including doorways, ceiling heights, and the turn at the top of the stairs.
- Lay out what you already own in the new plan and see what genuinely lands.
- Decide what is sentimental and non-negotiable. We design around those pieces rather than arguing with them.
- Only then decide what to buy — usually far less than people expect.
A smaller house is not a lesser one
The fear behind most downsizing projects is that the new home will feel like a compromise — that everything will be a bit tighter, a bit less gracious, a bit more temporary. That outcome is avoidable, and it usually comes down to three decisions rather than square footage.
Fewer, better pieces at the correct scale beat more pieces that technically fit. One generous seating group is worth more than two cramped ones. And storage has to be designed in from the start, because the single thing that makes a smaller home feel small is possessions with nowhere to go.
Most of this work happens in Venice, the Lakewood Ranch villages, and around Sarasota and Bradenton, where downsizers usually arrive from a much larger northern house and a much weaker light.
“Three days after staging was done, we went pending and secured a great offer. The buyers wanted to make sure that no one else came in and swooped it from them. It was a great investment on my seller’s part, and I am glad that I trusted Purposely Placed to do the staging. It paid off for my sellers tenfold!”

Downsizers & relocating homeowners — questions, answered.
Can you help if I am not selling my house?
Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. Interior design and decorating for people staying in their homes runs from a single room refresh to a whole-house furniture plan, working with the pieces you want to keep.
Do I have to replace everything I own?
No. Most projects keep more than the homeowner expects. Tell us what you love or cannot part with and we design around it — the pieces we replace are usually the ones that are the wrong scale for the room rather than the wrong style.
How long does an interior design project take?
A single-room refresh using available pieces can be finished in a few weeks. A whole-house furniture plan is usually a few months, because custom upholstery and case goods carry real lead times. We give you the schedule with the proposal so you are not guessing.
Do you charge for the first consultation?
The initial phone conversation is free. The on-site walkthrough is where the real work starts, so for design and colour projects it is a paid consultation; for staging it is typically folded into the project if you move ahead. We tell you which applies before we book anything.
What is the first step?
Send us a note with your address, timeline, and a few photos. Betsy will come back to arrange a walkthrough, and after that you receive a written proposal with scope and pricing. There is no charge for the conversation.
